Doug McVay
Transitional Interim Pastor
Douglas L. McVay
Ministry Objective:
To assist churches through a period of transition. I am a trained new church Specialties Transitional Interim Pastor. The verse that defines my life is found in John 2:17 (NLT), “Passion for God’s house burns within me!”
After 39 years in full time pastoral ministry, I am now using my years of experience to help churches in transition move from “Anxiety to Anticipation” of a great new day.
Ministry Experience:
- Pastored churches in Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, and Michigan. The size varied from 100 in our first church to over 400 average in our previous pastorates before retiring.
- Conducted building programs through stewardship campaigns in three of the churches.
- Started two Day Care ministries and added a Christian School (K-6) to one of the Day Cares in Ohio.
- Multi-staff experiences through hiring and continuous training.
- Conflict resolution experience in several churches.
- District Advisory Board member on most of the districts served. District Secretary of the San Antonio district for six years. A member of the board of Ministerial Credential, and for several years in Kansas and Ohio was the District Youth Leader.
- Conducted leadership development within the local church in Michigan through “Joshua’s Men”, a method outlined by Enjoy Ministries.
- Started a new church 20 miles north of our pastorate in Harlingen, TX
- I would consider my greatest ministry accomplishment took place during my pastorate at Chapman Memorial Church of the Nazarene. This church was commonly known as the “Church of the Camp-ground” due to its proximity to the Indian Lake Nazarene Camp. We desired a change in focus and mission. We wanted to impact the community, not just the Camp-ground. We had special meetings with the City manager to discover the needs of our community. I joined the Rotary in order to get acquainted with city leaders. Everything we did was to change the image of the church. We hired staff that would gain entrance into the school system again to give a new image of the church. We connected with the grade school near us through a new ministry called “Kids Hope, Inc.” We build a large “family life center” to reach younger families with children and teens. We also started a day care center in our new facility to give families an opportunity to experience our ministry. One of the blessings received out of all of this focus and vision was the conversion and joining the church of the Superintendent of Schools. The church genuinely focuses on the ministry to the community.
- Served as TIP pastor of Kalamazoo First Church of the Nazarene for twenty months. This congregation was a hurting and divided church that had fallen in attendance to 400+ to about 150. Naturally, they would experience a full range of emotions including uncertainty, loss of focus, fear, and anxiety. The exciting fact is that God has helped us. This wonderful group of people have experienced a new day of spiritual health, refocus, and anticipation of the future. Our DS, Dr John Seaman said, “TIP’s, and Pastor Doug McVay, helped us save this church.”

I am interested in remaining physically trim and healthy through exercise and proper nourishment. I enjoy playing golf although I don’t go as often as I would like. I also enjoy reading books that improve my passion for ministry. Some of the books that I would consider as significant that impacted my life would be “Purpose Driven Church” (Rick Warren), “Falling in Love with the Church” (Larry McKain), “The Present Future” (McNeal), “Responsible Grace” (Maddix) and “What’s So Amazing About Grace” (Philip Yancey)
